Does Radio Have a Strategy For Smart Phones?

Does Radio Have a Strategy For Smart Phones?

When you get an opportunity to spend time with people using their iPhone or Android you get a real sense of how consumers have developed relationships with their device. Radio, for the longest time, has had a special relationship with consumers. Radio executives and managers, to this day, still tout the bond listeners have with their local station or morning DJ. When Fred Jacobs played video of the consumers he tracked in a recent study it was more confirmation that consumers are doing nearly everything on these tiny devices. Banking, games, e-mail, making calls, using it as a flashlight, taking pictures and yes, listening to music. But these consumers in cities like L.A., Cleveland, Baltimore and Dallas were not telling Jacobs "I have my favorite radio station App" on their phones. Is that a problem for radio?

James Cridland Wows The Crowd at Tech Summit

The UK's James Cridland dazzled Tuesday's Tech Ink attendees with some very cool apps now being used in his country and advised U. S. broadcasters to try to speak more as one voice. Cridland emphasized why companies like Pandora and LastFM are making headway here in the United States. "They speak with one voice. It's one company asking for one thing, that's why they are getting into automobiles."

Arbitron Demos 'Project Leapfrog' E-Diary

A weeklong Web and mobile survey is the "primary means of data collection" in Arbitron's Project Leapfrog, said SVP/Marketing Bill Rose on a Tuesday conference call to talk about the "new experimental approach" to data collection in midsized and small markets. The Leapfrog approach got a good response in a test last year, but there's much more testing to come before Arbitron will be ready to predict a launch date for the methodology.

An update on the national spot radio market signed by Katz Radio Group President Mark Gray points to "strong gains in a number of leading advertising categories, including automotive (domestic), finance, retail, and telecom." National spot radio is pacing up 1.4 percent in the second quarter, while early Q3 pacing shows numbers up more than 7 percent year-over-year.
Fisher: FrontFour Will Not Take Control

Fisher: FrontFour Will Not Take Control

Fisher Communications' board has waged a fierce proxy battle against a slate of nominees proposed by FrontFour Capital, which, says Fisher, iwanted to break up the company and sell it. In an SEC filing on its shareholders' meeting, Fisher says it's not yet ready to name the new board, but based on preliminary results, "it appears that neither party will have elected a full slate of nominees."
FCC Has A Fine Day

FCC Has A Fine Day

The FCC issues a flurry of NALs and forfeitures, including a $25,000 notice of apparent liability to the licensee of WIRJ-AM/Humboldt, TN, for, among other things, failing to maintain an effective locked fence around the base of the station's antenna.

TrafficAlert Mobile Launched By GreenOwl Mobile.

GreenOwl Mobile is launching a new channel partner program for its TrafficAlert mobile service at Radio Ink Convergence 2011. This program will help media outlets across the US and Canada reach their consumers with valuable personalized and localized traffic information. The app is co-branded with the radio or TV station logo and provides a platform and revenue streams for promotion of existing and new advertisers.

Tech Summit Quote of The Day

Yesterday's top quote came from a promo for Capital FM in London played during Cridland's keynote. The artist on the promo said "The middle man between me and my fans is radio." Certainly a quote worth stealing and using. Follow all the quotes at Tech Summit today on Twitter #techsum or @radio_ink

Tech Summit Great Idea of the Day

Comes from Rick Rick Ducey, Chief Strategy Officer, BIA/Kelsey during the panel hosted by Fred Jacobs. Ducey said radio stations "do not have to have only one app. You can have the wake-up app. You can have the traffic-app" People love their apps. If you have someone at the radio station that can build apps why build upon the relationship your station has with your listeners and give them more of what they love. Stay tuned for more great quotes and on top of all the news from the Summit by following Radio Ink on Facebook

Online Visitors and Listeners Embrace Ads

Online Visitors and Listeners Embrace Ads

As more and more stations and broadcasters are beginning to realize, online listeners and visitors are not only used to seeing ads, but are in full acceptance of ads. According to Forbes Magazine, Amazon recently conducted their own survey of Kindle customers and came up with some not-so-surprising facts. Facts that are, indeed, of great interest to the world of e-commerce and online publishers. This is not new information to many, like myself, that are deeply involved with online streaming and the monetization thereof on a daily basis.

Radio Ink Launches "I Want FM"

Perhaps the example of what took place in Tyler Texas last night is a great example of why radio stations across America should get behind the push to have FM chips installed in cell phones. Public safety is one of the reasons the NAB is making a push to install the chips. Yesterday, Radio Ink publisher Eric Rhoads wrote an editorial about the chips and debuted a new commercial we are hoping radio stations can use to help educate the public.
