The Truth About How Clear Channel Let Me Go

The Truth About How Clear Channel Let Me Go

Five years ago George Toulas was on sabatical when he received a call from John Hogan. Hogan needed someone to run the Clear Channel Miami cluster. Toulas needed to know if he still had his fastball. Having worked in radio as far back as the Chancellor and AM/FM days Toulas was no spring chicken. Add to that, time away from the business and it's understandable why anyone would wonder if they still had what it takes to succeed in this stress-filled sales-driven business. The icing on the cake no doubt was the pressure and high expectations of being part of radio's biggest company. Bonneville sold 17 stations to Ginny Morris' Hubbard Broadcasting for $505 million. Morris tells Radio Ink all about the deal with Bonneville in the June 6th issue of Radio Ink. The 17 stations now part of Hubbard are in Washington, D.C., Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati. As part of the deal, Hubbard received two players to be named later. They turned out to be Reese and Horowitz.

Neil Part 2. On Dereg. On The Web. On History.

For 25 years Bob Neil has been part of the broadcasting industry, most recently as Executive Vice President for Cox, until announcing his retirement this week. During that time he witnessed regulation and deregulation. Now, with one foot out the door, and a chance to reflect on arguably the one piece of legislation that transformed the industry, we asked Neil if deregulation was a good thing or a bad thing.
Fisher Shareholder Meeting Not So Confrontational

Fisher Shareholder Meeting Not So Confrontational

After a flurry of nasty letters sent to shareholders over the past several months, Wednesday's shareholder meeting was a lot more professional. The letters being sent by the Fisher board of Directors and shareholder FrontFour were aimed at convincing shareholders to vote for their candidates at Wednesday's annual meeting. FrontFour accuses the Fisher board, and more specifically, CEO Colleen Brown of being incompetent and basically running the company into the ground. The Fisher board responds by saying FrontFour is simply a hedge fund looking to make a quick buck on the company and will say anything to get votes.

Wilson says he attends Convergence to "stay on top of the ever-changing world of digital media and traditional media, and their merging into one new technology. The digital world is moving so fast...faster than tranditional radio people are used to dealing with."

Radio Ink Launches "I Want FM"

Perhaps the example of what took place in Tyler Texas last night is a great example of why radio stations across America should get behind the push to have FM chips installed in cell phones. Public safety is one of the reasons the NAB is making a push to install the chips. Yesterday, Radio Ink publisher Eric Rhoads wrote an editorial about the chips and debuted a new commercial we are hoping radio stations can use to help educate the public.
