Since Mark Mays walked out the door things sure have been changing at Clear Channel. It could just be normal day-to-day business. Stuff does happen at big companies when there are so many people, so many businesses, so many layers. Or, one might conclude, that these are changes hatched by a new regime. A regime with a budget-cutting hammer and the freedom to swing away. |

Yesterday the radio industry learned that 25-year radio veteran Bob Neil was retiring. Neil has been on the Radio Ink Top 40 Most Powerful People in Radio list since the list was created. Neil joined Cox in 1986 as station manager of Atlanta's WSB-AM/FM, and in 1988 was named VP/GM of Tampa's WWRM-FM. From 1989 to 1992 he was VP/GM of WSB-AM/FM, and from 1992 to 1996 Neil served as executive VP for radio at Cox Broadcasting. He was named president and chief executive officer of Cox Radio in 1996, when it became a public company, and served until 2009, when he began serving in his current position. |

Saga CEO Ed Christian was hoping the quarter would come in a little stronger but added the winter weather was so wicked in his markets that the demand was just not there from retailers. And as Entercom reported, Saga also had some last minute business cancellations from foreign automotive manufacturers due to the Tsunami. Overall, Christian says, 2011 will be "a decent year." He says it gets down to the basics of selling. If salespeople do their cold calls, presentations and spec spots and repeat the process we will succeed. |

In 2006, Congress passed the Warning, Alert and Response Network (WARN) Act, requiring phone carriers that choose to participate to activate PLAN technology by April 2012. Nearly five years later, and without any mention of FM chips in cell phones, PLAN was announced by the New York Mayor, The FCC Chairman and wireless phone company officials. What do top executives in radio have to say about this? |

My thanks to Dick Lewis and Jon Zellner for this tremendous and unique opportunity." |

Nominations are now being accepted for the Radio Wayne Awards. The Radio Wayne awards are named in honor of "Radio Wayne" Cornils, who set a high example for professionalism in radio. A successful small-market radio broadcaster, Cornils also served as executive vice president of the Radio Advertising Bureau and SVP/Radio at the National Association of Broadcasters. |

Radio Ink has changed the name of one of the Radio Wayne awards to honor the late Katz Media Group President and CEO Stu Olds who passed away in 2010. The National Sales Manager award will now be called the Radio Ink/Stu Olds National Sales Manager Award. Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads commented "Stu Olds set a high standard for the radio business and his passing was a great loss to our industry. Naming this award after Stu is our little way of helping to keep his standards and his memory alive." |

Radio Ink's Convergence 2011 begins in one week and rather than us telling you over and over again why you should attend, we figured we'd ask someone who's attended the show in the past and will be joining us again this year. Bryce Wilson is the webmaster and director of digital operations for Curtis Media in Raleigh. Wilson says he attends Convergence to "stay on top of the ever-changing world of digital media and traditional media, and their merging into one new technology. The digital world is moving so fast...faster than tranditional radio people are used to dealing with." |

Perhaps the example of what took place in Tyler Texas last night is a great example of why radio stations across America should get behind the push to have FM chips installed in cell phones. Public safety is one of the reasons the NAB is making a push to install the chips. Yesterday, Radio Ink publisher Eric Rhoads wrote an editorial about the chips and debuted a new commercial we are hoping radio stations can use to help educate the public. |
