The NAB recently submitted comments to the FCC in favor of more deregulation (see attached story). Saul Levine, a long-time broadcaster from North Carolina says that's a recipe for disaster for small broadcasters like him. He says more deregulation will lead to a few companies dominating radio and that's bad for independent operators. Levine says, due to the NAB's position on deregulation, he's planning to cancel his NAB membership and is forwarding a letter to NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith. Here is a note Levine sent out to the press yesterday.
"I will forward to you a letter on the way to Gordon Smith stating that in view of the NAB decision to petition the FCC to do away with rules against consolidation, and to allow entities such as Bain/Capital/Wall Street to own as many stations in a market as they wish and to do away with caps and sub caps on ownership limitations WITHOUT even determining membership position on such a deregulation of the radio market place is unacceptable and will allow a few companies to dominate the radio industry to the detriment of independent radio broadcasters. It is well known that Saul Levine/Mount Wilson FM Broadcasters (The oldest major market independent broadcaster in the USA) has been actively opposing the very doctrine that NAB chose to support without the knowledge and consent of Mount Wilson or other independent broadcasters. Unless NAB withdraws such comments that only benefit WALL STREET against MAIN STREET, Mount Wilson will cancel its membership in NAB."
