Bullet points shot out by the Pandora corporate office highlight April 2012 user listening numbers. And, according to Pandora, it's total take of all radio listening is now up to 6%. That's if you believe that listening to Pandora is actually listening to radio, a topic often debated. It's also being debated whether airing one short commercial every 20 minutes is annoying. Probably not. Pandora says listener hours during April were 1.06 billion, an increase of 87% from 566 million during the same period last year.
Pandora also says active listeners were 51.9 million at the end of April 2012, an increase of 52% from 34.0 million during the same time period last year. Active users are defined as the number of distinct registered users that have requested audio from Pandora servers within the trailing 30 days to the end of the final calendar month of the period. The number of active users may overstate the number of unique individuals who actively use the Pandora service within a month as one individual may register for, and use, multiple accounts."
CEO Joe Kennedy was a keynote speaker at the CTIA 2012 Mobile Leadership conference Tuesday. His speech was aimed at letting everyone know that this was just the beginning for Pandora, just the beginning for the mobile industry. Kennedy typically likes to take jabs at the radio industry. He threw no radio barbs yesterday.
