It's hard to imagine any other family of broadcasters could top 88 years, especially in the number one market in America. When John Gambling walks away from the WOR microphone for the final time December 20, he brings to an end nearly nine decades of family broadcasting in the Big Apple. He's been contemplating retirement for about five months, and when he told his wife he handed in his notice she was flummoxed. Even though they spoke about it, she never believed he'd go through with it. Gambling and his wife will now spend winters in Florida. We spoke to Gambling Monday afternoon about his 40 years in radio, working for the late Rick Buckley, how radio has evolved, and who should occupy the chair once he says his final goodbye. Clear Channel Market Manager Joe Puglise said, "John Gambling is a New York City radio icon and we are grateful for his time and commitment to WOR and our loyal listeners over the years. His presence in morning radio will be missed throughout the industry, especially by the New Yorkers he informed and entertained for years."
WOR has begun the search for a new morning show host that will be announced soon.
