2009 Was A Revenue Disaster For Radio

It may be a long long time before radio sees the kind of revenue it enjoyed in 2005. That's the story from BIA/Kelsey as the company puts out predictions for radio revenue over the next 5 years. In 2005 and 2006 radio was soaring with revenues up near the $18 billion mark. The revenue crater of 2009 could take a very long time to dig out of. A look back at 2009 revenues gives a clear picture of why so many companies had trouble.

Clear Channel Plan to Replace Mark Mays

Mark Mays is officially out at Clear Channel. The board has made some changes to try and fill the void left by the departing Mays. They have established a new position called "Office of the Chief Executive Officer to serve the functions of the Chief Executive Officer and President until such time that a permanent replacement for Mr. Mays is hired. Clear Channel has appointed Thomas Casey, the current Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Company, and Robert H. Walls, Jr., the current Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the Company to also serve in such newly-created office for each of the Company.They oth keep their current responsibilities.

Pandora Receives Privacy Subpoena

Pandora admitted receiving the subpoena in a filing and says it believes it is one of many companies to receive subpoenas in a probe into the information-sharing practices of publishers that make apps for the iPhone and other smartphones that run on Google's Android operating system. Pandora also says it is "not a specific target" of the investigation. Pandora is getting ready to file an IPO.

Advertiser Bails From Clear Channel Morning Show

HealthPartners pulled its advertising after an uproar at Clear Channel's KDWB in the Twin Cities. The Dave Ryan Morning Show held a contest that wound up making fun of Hmong-Americans. During the show a Hmong listener suggested a song title 30 Hmongs in a House. The show wrote lyrics set to Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven.

There's no doubt each and every one of us can do more for the military personnel who put their lives on the line every day so we can live free and safe here at home. Not to mention the misery their loved ones have to go through on a daily basis wondering if they'll ever get that dreaded knock on the door. All the while, in many cases, taking care of children by themselves and working full-time to keep the home life normal. Kudos to Townsquare media for launching a brand new company-wide program designed to help our brave men and women.

BIA/Kelsey Says Big Digital Revenue Increases Are Coming.

Radio revenue hit $14.1 billion in 2010, a 5.4 percent increase over 2009, according to this year's first edition of BIA/Kelsey's quarterly "Investing In Radio Market Report." BIA/Kelsey says 2011 the 2011 increase should be more moderate at 3.7%. The 2012 prediction is an increase of 4.5 percent. The firm also projects online/digital revenues for radio will experience a 14.1 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the five-year period beginning 2011. Revenues from online/digital provided $405 million to the industry in 2010 and are expected to rise from $494 million this year to $783 million by 2015.

Westwood One in Trouble? Unable to File Timely Paperwork

Westwood One has determined that is not in a position to file its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2010 by its prescribed due date, March 31, 2011. The Company is presently in discussions with its lenders to amend the terms of its debt agreements to ease its debt leverage covenants with the holders of the Company's 15.0% Senior Secured Notes due July 15, 2012, the outcome of which could have an impact on certain 10-K disclosure and analyses

Eddie Harrell will take over the Columbus cluster on June 1st. Harrell is not a radio guy. Harrell has held the position of President and CEO for the Columbus Urban League for the past five years where he successfully led the organization to positive business results after several consecutive years of six figure operating deficits.

Mary Rogers New GSM For Cox in Tampa

Cox radio in Tampa has added Mary Rogers as General Sales Manager of WWRM-FM and WXGL-FM. The Cox properties in Tampa include WWRM-FM 94.9, WXGL-FM 107.3, WSUN-FM 97.1, WHPT-FM 102.5, WPOI-FM 101.5, and WDUV-FM 105.5. Rogers has spent the last nine years with CMG's Tulsa radio operations.

Entercom Buffalo to Simulcast NewsRadio WBEN on FM

Beginning today Entercom will dump classic rock from 107.7 in Buffalo and simulcast "The Voice of Buffalo-WBEN".  The news station will continue to broadcast at 930 on the AM dial. WBEN's entire programming line-up will be simulcast on 107.7 FM.

AGM Flips From Sports to Talk in Bakersfield.

American General Media is dumping ESPN for an all talk format in California. They are calling it Smart Talk 1230 with a focus on consumer and financial issues. KERN personality Jeff Lemucchi joins with co-hosts Richard Beene, Lois Henry, Robert Price and John Arthur every weekday morning at 10:00 am to provide perspective while discussing and analyzing the issues that affect Bakersfield and Kern County.

Gifford Named PD For Bonneville in Seattle.

KIRO-FM and KTTH-AM in Seattle will have a new program director on May 2nd. Bonneville in Seattle has hired Larry Gifford for the position. "When I first heard that Ryan Hatch was leaving KIRO and KTTH, I said to my wife that's an amazing opportunity for someone", said Gifford. "Little did I know that someone would be me. Bonneville Seattle has some of the brightest, most talented people in the business, and they are transforming spoken word radio. I look forward to helping them pursue that vision".
