WTOP Giving $30k Away to D.C. Charities

4-2-14

Starting Monday, WTOP will start an online contest called ?Click for a Cause? which gives Washington, DC-area non-profit organizations the chance to vie for one of three $10,000 prizes. Runners-up will each win $5,000 worth of commercials to advertise their organizations on WTOP.

The prizes will be awarded in three categories, based on an organization's annual expenses: large (over $13.5 million), medium ($3.5 million-$13.5 million) and small (up to $3.5 million). Winners are based on the highest number of votes (likes) received during the contest.

Local charities can register from April 7 through midnight, April 13 at www.wtop.com/clickforacause. To register and be qualified, a charity must be a designated 501(c)(3) organization and be incorporated in the Washington, DC metro region or have a verifiable DC-region chapter.  Also, the majority of the charity's funds must serve the Capitol region.  Entries will be vetted the week of April 14.

WTOP Director of Marketing Mary Kay LeMay says, "'Click for a Cause' provides an opportunity for all sizes of organizations to fundraise in a fun and easy way, and the social aspect allows for grass-roots marketing and exposure. We at WTOP are happy to use our megaphone as a catalyst for helping some great causes."

Voting will take place April 21 through 5 pm on Friday April 25.  Voting is accomplished by visiting the Click for a Cause page at wtop.com/clickforacause and clicking "like' on the charity you wish to vote for.  Listeners must have a Facebook account to participate, and people can vote for as many charities as they wish, but only once per charity.

Winners will be announced the week of April 28.
