Local Radio In Syracuse Isn't Dead Yet

4-16-14

That's the title of a column written by John Hunt, GSM for FoxFur Communications in Syracuse at Syracuse.com. Hunt says radio hears about the demise of radio all the time. He says the truth is "radio has been an ongoing, dependable medium for listeners, musicians, advertisers, and other content providers like talk show hosts for over a hundred years. The medium has been more flexible than any other in the way it adapts to trends, fads, and community needs." Hunt goes on to describe both the winning and losing radio business models.

According to Hunt, the key to successful radio, radio with local impact, is to be true to the community. "To be true to the listeners who enjoy the content of their favorite station. To be true to the core audience who knows what is happening in the community and know their station will be a megaphone for what is important to them and people like them. When we hear of companies that carry crippling corporate debt, we know that in the end the upside-down business model will self-implode; because the focus at that point is no longer on the community, but on shrinking the debt above any other priority."
