(SOCIAL) Taylor Swift's Social Media Secrets

4-16-2014

This isn?t about how popular Taylor Swift is or if her career is up or down or if she makes you crazy or you love every smile, every song, and every reaction she has at awards shows. It?s about understanding the basic elements of creating the right kind of buzz in social media and engaging where it is most important for actual impact for your brand.

1. Taylor Swift knows her audience. Do you know yours? Without a strong vision for what you want to accomplish and who you most want to attract, you?re just like every consumer on Facebook or Twitter. You?re wasting your time. To make sure you?re not wasting your time, be like Taylor and know who you?re after.
2. Taylor Swift focuses on her audience. This really means that the content she tweets has a purpose and is narrowly defined to have an impact specifically on her audience. Do you do this? Or is your social media content guesswork or ?for the masses?? Zero in and take a page out of Taylor?s social media diary to focus your impact where it will have the most value.
3. Taylor Swift doesn?t spend too much time thinking about what people who are not in her audience are thinking. She knows those thoughts are not really important. Anyone can get distracted by the thoughts of others. Taylor rises above the noise and keeps her eyes on her prize. You should, too. Don?t spend too much time thinking what competitors might think, what critics might think, or focused on anything but the audience you most want to attract and engage.
4. Taylor Swift interconnects her social media world. Tweets and retweets and a network of peeps to sprinkle content sharing. Are you doing this with players on your morning show, your website, email, other players in your building and select ?street team members,? or are you just taking one step with your social media?
5. Taylor Swift reacts. She is willing to be open and even vulnerable and this is why you see her at awards shows being a ?fan? of other artists, singing along, and being just like her?audience. Are you reacting to things your audience loves with a familiarity that makes your audience feel you are just like them? People want to belong to something. Being vulnerable and showing you are naturally in tune with your audience can have a super-big payday.
6. Taylor Swift entertains. You should, too. From focusing on your on-air content to making sure your social media matches up well in terms of entertainment value, entertaining the audience you want to attract, grow, and ultimately send back to your on-air brand is essential for you to truly explode your success.

We?re 14 years into the 21st century. What?s happening? Are you ?old guy? or are you ?in the now?? You don?t have to settle for ?your place.? You can use what you know about the audience you most want to attract and use social media to grow your audience. Just follow Taylor Swift?s secrets for your morning show, your radio station, and your personalities.
