What Will Steve Dahl Do Next Week?

July 6, 2011

Chicago is hotbed of activity these days. In less than 30 days Randy Michaels should assume control of Emmis' two FM radio stations via LMA. The LOOP and The Q will be part of Merlin Media and the Windy City is rampant with speculation that Michaels will flip one to news compete with CBS. And, arguably, one of the guys that put the LOOP on the map Steve Dahl comes off his non-compete with CBS this Friday. Dahl was fired by CBS owned WJMK-FM back in 2008 but under contract to stay off the air, which basically means get paid to do nothing. Rumor has it that Dahl was being paid $1 million a year to sit on the sidelines.

We reached out to Dahl last night to ask him what his plans are. There is no way someone like Steve Dahl is going to fade away from the spotlight. At least that's what we think. He told us there was nothing he could talk about until next week and a Chicago paper says Dahl will announce his plans via Twitter at noon on Monday (@stevedahlshow). "By this time next week you will know what my new career plan will be!" Dahl tweeted yesterday.

Steve Dahl was part of one of the most memorable radio promotions of all time. The WLUP/White Sox Disco Demolition. Thanks to www.chicagoradioandmedia.com there is audio tape of this promotion held in 1979. In fact it was nearly 32 years ago to the day that the LOOP pulled this one off. It's great audio to listen to and it makes you wonder, other than concerts, when was the last time radio pulled off such a successful and powerful promotion. A promotion people still talk about three decades later. Listening to the tape and watching the accompanying video is classic. Enjoy Supereme Commander Steve Dahl.

Hey Will, when was the last time that anything you did made anyone notice? When was the last time anyone gave a rip about anything you said, thought or did? What's that? Never? Thought so. Go back to listening to XRT and Edie Brickell.

Change the calls to WEGO, add a couple of old guys who still don't understand they got lucky once upon a time but have nothing to offer today's listener, and mix with some dumb money .... A recipe for yet another disturbing flush of capital that could have been invested in something besides sewer futures.
