Entercom Issues Statement On Data Breach

5-13-14

KOIN-TV reported the breach in data occurred back on February 28 when a backpack was stolen from an Entercom Portland employee's car. The TV station says up to 13,000 people might be affected by the theft, and some of the data included social security numbers and bank account information. It's not known if the thief is able to actually access any personal data. Special software is needed to read it. The corporate office of Entercom issued the following statement about the situation.

"This incident was not a system-wide cyber-attack and it was not a breach of our GetMyPerks Ecommerce platform. We do not know of any actual or attempted misuse of data related to this incident. The data was a cartridge backup of a single, stand-alone file server. These cartridges require an individual to have access to both special software and special hardware. They cannot be accessed by a typical home computer. It does not appear that the backup cartridges were the target of the theft. To the contrary, we believe that the backpack was the target. A number of vehicles were broken into that evening in the same area. We conducted an independent, third-party forensic investigation into the content of the cartridges. The files mostly contained employee-generated information used during the normal course of running radio stations: music, images and video files. Some files contained certain personal information. We are not aware of any misuse of the data. Nevertheless, we have contacted card servicing companies and have notified all 3 credit bureaus. We also have provided notice to those whose information might have been compromised. We posted information about this incident on our stations' websites. We are offering free credit monitoring and identify theft restoration services to all affected people.?
