NAB: End Cross-Ownership Bans, Relax Radio Rules

The NAB is urging the FCC to do away with the newspaper-broadcast and radio-television cross-ownership bans and to allow "continuing relaxation of local radio restrictions" as it files comments in the FCC's notice of inquiry on its 2010 quadrennial review of the media-ownership rules. The NAB says the existing restrictions on media ownership "are not needed to ensure programming, viewpoint, source, or outlet diversity in the 21st-century media marketplace."

CBS Radio's WPHT (The Big Talker 1210) in Philadelphia is holding a live broadcast and fundraiser Wednesday and is taking donations to "Help Arizona" defend itself against a federal lawsuit over the state's new immigration law. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is among those set to appear at the event, hosted by WPHT afternoon personality Dom Giordano.

Insurance giant Geico aired the most radio spots the week of July 5-11, Media Monitors reports, with 59,661 ads on the air. Home Depot dropped to number two, with 36,148 spots. In a "Spot 10" on fast food, McDonald's led nationwide, with 25,556 radio ads last week.

FCC: No Change To Fee Methodology

While it calls the recommendations "interesting," the FCC has rejected ideas for reworking its regulatory fee structure for fiscal 2010 that were filed in comments on an earlier notice of proposed rulemaking. The agency will keep the same assessment method it used in 2009, but will collect about 2 percent less in fees this year.
