Kerr: Settling PPM Dispute Was Q2's Big Achievement

On the company's second-quarter earnings call Wednesday, Arbitron President/CEO Bill Kerr cited the resolution of the long-running dispute with the PPM Coalition as "an important achievement for us," letting the company refocus its resources on other matters. Also during the call, CFO Sean Creamer said getting Univision back on board for PPM measurement is key to the company's reaching the top end of its guidance for the months ahead.

Arbitron Revenue Rises In Q2

Arbitron reports revenue of $88.3 million for the second quarter, up 1.8 percent from $86.8 million in Q2 2009. Costs were up 2.1 percent, to $85.9 million, largely due to the ongoing PPM rollout. Net income for the quarter came in at $3.8 million (14 cents per share).

Journal Revenue Holds Steady In Q2

Journal Communications' radio revenue was up 3.5 percent, to $17.7 million, in the second quarter, while the company overall's revenue was all but flat, at $104.4 million. Journal saw operating earnings of $14.4 million (14 cents per share) in Q2, compared to an operating loss of $9.5 million (11 cents) in the same period in 2009.

FCC Defends Its Right To Change Ownership Rules

The FCC's general counsel has filed a brief with the Third Circuit defending the FCC's authority to make the changes to the ownership rules it adopted in 2008. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said, "While the rules being challenged were adopted before I became chairman, I support our general counsel in arguing that the order was within the discretion of the commission."

Nielsen says comparisons of its spring 2010 and spring 2009 ratings results in its 51 radio markets shows "impressive year-over-year stability" in key listening metrics. TSL was consistent with a year ago, while 25-54 listeners are still the "sweet spot" for radio.
