Arbitron Releases 2011 Market Rankings

Aribtron released its 2011 market rankings and there were several significant changes that may certainly have an impact on revenue. For example Portland, ME jumped 78 spots going from market 168 to 90. Jonesboro, AR is 55 spots higher going from 284 to 220.  Corpus Christi TX is now market 111, 26 spots higher in 2011. And, Amarillo, TX is 24 spots higher now at 169. While there were several notable drops, none as significant as the big gainers. Cape Cod is down 7 spots to 202, Toledo drops 6 to 89, Fort Wayne Dropped 5 to 113 and Jacksonville is down 4 spots to 50.

In the top ten markets, the top 7 remain in tact: New York, L.A., Chicago, San Fran, Dallas and Houston. Philadelphia is now number 7 and Washington, DC is number 8. Atlanta drops two spots to number 9. And Boston stays put at number 10. There are a total of 284 markets ranked by Arbitron, 6 less than there were a year ago. Arbitron update its list every year. They are based on updated total population estimates.

Arbitron says "these total population estimates and the Black and Hispanic population estimates are based on the Census 2010 data, updated and projected to January 1, 2012. Other Census-based population estimates, such as age and sex, continue to be based on 2000 Census data. These estimates will be updated based on the 2010 Census in early 2012 as the market-level data we require becomes available from our vendor, Claritas, Inc."
