Burkett was 66 when he lost his battle with cancer last last week. For the last seven years, Burkett was the station manager and had an on-air shift on WSEV-FM. East Tennessee Radio Group owner Paul Fink, who worked with Burkett for more than two decades, told The Mountain Press newspaper Burkett was ?One of the best guys you would ever meet. Bill was very friendly and could identify with anybody, and I believe that?s what made him so popular with his listeners. He was an absolute rarity in our industry. In radio, oftentimes you find people with little talent but great big egos. Bill had a wonderful combination of a great talent and a little ego.?
