Stu Olds Passes

You will have heard by now the sad news that Stu Olds, 60, respected president and CEO of Katz Media Group, passed away Saturday morning at a New York hospital. Olds, a 30-plus-year veteran of the leading rep firm, was named CEO in 2000. He had been ill with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Hogan: Olds Was 'A Pillar Of Our Radio Community'

In a memo to all Katz Media Group and Clear Channel Radio employees, CCR President/CEO John Hogan said of the passing of Katz Media Group President/CEO Stu Olds, "Today we have lost a special man and a great friend." Clear Channel is the parent company of Katz Media Group, and Hogan said Clear Channel making plans to mark Olds' passing.

 

Updated: Industry Remembers Stu Olds

The radio industry is remembering Katz Media Group President/CEO Stu Olds, who passed away Saturday morning. Emmis Communications Chairman/CEO Jeff Smulyan said of Olds, "He led his company and our industry with kindness, passion, and most of all integrity." CBS Radio President/CEO Dan Mason, Cumulus Chairman/CEO Lew Dickey, Greater Media Chairman/CEO Peter Smyth, and others also pay tribute to Olds.

Sherwood Heads ABC News

Ben Sherwood, a former executive producer of Good Morning America, has been named to head ABC News, succeeding David Westin. Westin is set to retire at the end of the year.

Cubs Broadcaster Ron Santo Dies

Longtime Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo, who played for the team for 14 of his 15 seasons as a Major League ballplayer, has died of cancer at age 70. Tom Langmyer, VP/GM of Cubs flagship WGN, said, "Today we lost one of the most beloved Cubs of all time."

Smith: 'Discussions Continue' On Radio Royalties

In an interview with National Journal, NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith said talks are continuing over performance royalties for radio. He said, "If the payments are too large they become a tax, and then you destroy the dissemination of music because a lot of radio stations won't be able to pay."
 

FCC Asks For Comment On New Auction Approach

The FCC's Media and Wireless Telecommunications Bureaus are asking for public comment on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Diversity for a new in competitive bidding for those who have overcome a "substantial disadvantage." Additionally, the Advisory Committee has been commissioned for another two years.
