How Many Markets Will Overlap in the Deal of the Decade?

What happens when you have 347 stations in one pot, 225 stations in another pot and you throw them all together in one big pot and mix them together with a $2.4 Billion stick? You might think there would be a lot of overlap. Well, not so fast. And, perhaps this is one of the reasons Lew Dickey and company decided this was a deal they had to have. When the deal closes Cumulus will have a home in 120 markets. We looked at all of them so you can see how the two groups match up.

Cumulus Doubles in Size With One Stroke of the Pen

The company created by Cumulus' purchase of Citadel will be another behemoth in the radio industry. When the two combine at the end of 2011 -- assuming the merger is approved by the FCC -- 4,000 more employees will receive Cumulus paychecks. Cumulus will go from owning 347 radio stations to owning 572 and will have a footprint in 120 markets, nearly doubling from 67. And all of it will be led, of course, by Cumulus Chairman/CEO Lew Dickey.

First the Announcement, Then The Obligatory Lawsuit Filings.

You wonder if these lawsuits are real or just publicity stunts by law firms grasping for straws. Almost immediately after the announcement was made that Cumulus was buying Citadel two law firms fired out press releases to make sure the "deal is fair".

NPR has not only been a big radio story with the resignation of President Vivian Schiller, it has also been a national story with the firing of Juan Williams and the debate over federal funding. Today, Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads jumps in the fire with his second blog on the subject. He says "the true colors of NPR management and their attitude about middle America" were revealed this week. And, that NPR "will die faster than a fly next to a can of Raid" giving radio a huge opportunity.

For the first quarter of 2011, Salem is projecting total revenue to increase 5% to 7% over first quarter 2010 total revenue of $48.3 million. Q4 Salem came out with Q4 and full 2010 results that showed small gains on the radio side.

Borrell Associates has just released a report entitled "Small Business's Become Everybody's Best Friend". The report summarizes feedback about media spending of about 2,000 small businesses. The growth in the coming year is expected to go mainly toward online. Radio came in fourth place.

Clear Channel Radio Promotes Rick Baran to EVP/CFO

Baran will oversee all financial and administrative operations for Clear Channel Radio as well as oversee the CCR Strategic Initiatives Office and its Business Affairs division. He will be part of the company's senior management team and report directly to Clear Channel Radio President and CEO John Hogan.

Cumulus Brings Mark Allen to Lexington as PD.

Cumulus Market Manager Mike Kenney says Allen will program WLXX 92.9 the Bear. Allen, who had been Program Director at WBYT B100 in South Bend IN, will oversee all facets of programming, manage the well established air staff and carry on the great tradition of this fabled country radio station. "It's great to have a quality program director to take this station to new heights," expressed Mr. Kenney.

Ann Arbor News Talk Station Returns to Local Ownership. 

Coolarity A2 of Ann Arbor reached an agreement to purchase conservative news talker WAAM 1600 from Ann Arbor First Ventures of Dallas. Coolarity A2 president Linda Hughes has worked at WAAM since 2004 and has been WAAM general manager since 2008. Her husband and long time business partner Thayrone is the host of WAAM's afternoon time talk show n The Edge With Thayrone.
