Save The Loop Crowd Fires Back. This is not a Hoax

Yesterday, Chicago Sun Times writer Robert Feder blogged about WLUP which included a statement (sent to employees) from Emmis market manager Marv Nyren. The story was about two former radio guys who Feder refered to as "jokers" that claim they are trying to save that legendary signal from evil corporate America. Emmis, who owns the station, has never tried to hide the fact that if someone made them the right offer they would sell. There has been no offer made by the group, but there has been a lot of noise and a lot of coverage in the radio press.

Liggins Says Q4 Radio One Revenue Rose 8%. Adds Q1 Has Started Off Flat.

Radio One's CEO and President Alfred Liggins said "Overall core radio revenues were up 8.1% in the fourth quarter compared to last year led by national business, which was up 19.3%, and radio segment internet revenue, which was up 179.1%. Q1 2011 has started sluggishly, with radio station revenue currently pacing flat to up low single-digits on a combined basis."

No Joke. Radio One Hires Former Stand up Comedian to Run Cincy Cluster

You don't often see a radio company hire someone to run a cluster of stations who hasn't climbed through the ranks. That's exactly what Radio One did with this hire. Douglas Spak has been in Cincinnati for the last 25 years and has 30 years of marketing and business development experience. Radio One says "Spak has relationships with advertisers and the community that will complement the mission and the focus of our three radio stations". Spak had his own consulting business and provided a variety of services to small and mid-sized businesses including brand and media strategy.

Greater Media Launches All Talk Station in Jersey

Calling it the Voice of Central New Jersey, WCTC-AM the stations New On-Air Line-Up includes Jack Ellery, Laura Ingraham, Bert Baron, Mancow & Alan Colmes. The stations new talk radio programming format is centered around local and legendary talk radio personality Jack Ellery, who hosts the Morning Show from 6am to10am. Ellery has been on WCTC for most of the past 50 years, focusing on the issues that affect Central Jerseyans.

Fisher Communications Reported Q4 and Full Year Results

On the Radio side, net revenue increased 17% in Q4 to $7.1 million. Cash flow grew $339,000 to $1.4 million and cash flow margin was 19.7%, up from 17.4%. For 2010 net revenue increased 11% to $25.3 million. Cash flow increased $755,000 to $4.9 million; Radio cash flow margin improved 1.2% to 19.2%. Among other media properties Fisher owns 8 radio stations in the western United States.

NAB Education Foundation Launches Technology Apprenticeship Program.

NABEF will debut a six-month Technology Apprenticeship Program designed to expose ten high-tech graduates and professionals to the broadcast industry. Program highlights include a two month, hands-on apprenticeship at a radio or television station, as well as completion of a three-day training program located at a major technology manufacturer. The application deadline is March 11th.
