SPECIAL REPORT PART TWO: What The FCC is Looking For...Through The Eyes of an Inspector

During a week Radio Ink happens to be running a 5-part series on FCC fines, there is no shortage of material. Just yesterday, one day after running a story on keeping your public file clean, another station gets nailed. WEIC was hit with a $1,300 fine for "its willful and repeated violation of failing to retain all required documentation in the Stations public inspection file. It dated back to 1996. The commission originally levied a $10,000 fine but reduced it to $1,300 yesterday.

Slacker CEO Chimes in on Clear Channel Plan to Nudge Into His Space

Allowing consumers to program their own radio station is the specialty of Pandora and Slacker. It's not perfect but the option to fast forward over a song you don't like is pretty cool. Yesterday radio behemoth Clear Channel decided it was time to get in that game. The big boys of radio picked up Thumbplay, a relatively unknown Internet music provider that made its bones selling ring tones at about ten bucks per month. Clear Channel doesn't have interest in the ring tone business. What they want is the technology to be able to allow listeners to pick and choose music. They plan to incorporate that technology into the iheartradio platform which already features Clear Channel's 750 radio stations.

Broadcasters Foundation Recognizes Family of the Late Stu Olds

More than 300 broadcasters were in attendance at the Plaza Hotel in New York earlier this week to honor Alan W. Frank, President and CEO, Post Newsweek Stations, as he received the 2011 Golden Mike Award. The fundraiser generated over $300,000 in support of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, the charity that provides aid to broadcasters in desperate need.

Katherine Albrecht Listeners Hope for Speedy Recovery From Breast Cancer

On February 22nd, Albrecht underwent a mastectomy of her left breast. After two weeks of replays, Albrecht chose to go live for 10 minutes with update on her health on Friday, February 25th. “I know a lot of folks out there have been just phenomenal,� Katherine told her audience. “The outpouring of support, love, prayers, and beautiful email has truly made this a remarkable event for me to realize how many people hear my voice every day and how many people were sending positive encouragement my way.�

Former Congressman Foley Loses Bid to Purchase WRMF in Palm Beach

The Palm Beach Post is reporting former Republican Mark Foley has failed in his attempt to purchase WRMF in that city. The paper reports that Dean Goodman a one-time exec at Paxson will purchase the station for about $16 million. Goodman lives in West Palm. In 2002 Jim Hilliard sold the station to a Boston group for $70 million. Foley, who left Congress due to scandal could not raise enough money to buy the station.
