(SOCIAL) Social Media With Purpose For Local Radio

8-20-2014

Great radio has always been about engaging the local community at a high level and being a part of exciting things happening locally, so that you amplify those things important to the community and your listeners. I know, you?re thinking it has always been about money. My feeling has always been that if you do the right things, ratings and revenue will appear and then grow. So, why isn?t social media like that for radio?

Here are four ways that you can help right now:

1. Build your social media to accomplish things for the community. There are active individuals and groups right now in your market that would love to be engaged and have their cause highlighted. Find them. Connect with them. Get them involved with your social media.
2. Create social media content that can be monetized. That?s right. We should create social media opportunities in a variety of things we do that help us generate money. Why not? This is how to engage your company in the value of social media. Just make sure you educate your players on the value of overall strategy and don?t make your social media appear to be advertising; it isn?t.
3. Make sure you have a well-thought-out social media content strategy by percentage of content, timing, and goals for the company. By creating an overall plan, you will add specific value that is important to you. Remember: Facebook doesn?t need promotion from you. They are fine. The focus should always be on building your local value to the community and your listeners.
4. Consistently execute your plan so you have goals you can track with your social media. Having goals and staying on point consistently is powerful. Tracking results is priceless because it means you can watch your social media value develop and chart how you are doing month by month.

That?s it. Keep it simple. Always be visual. Video. Pictures. Ask questions. Validate listeners, and movers and shakers in your community and on social media. Develop a serious social media content strategy, execute it daily with goals in mind and you will look like a rock star in your cluster and company soon enough.

Good luck!
