Everyone But Radio Pays

5-7-14

That was the quote from Republican Representative from Tennessee Marsha Blackburn (pictured) who has introduced the Protecting the Rights of Musicians Act. This legislation would require any television station owner who opts for retransmission consent payments to pay performers for their music if they also own a radio station. Blackburn is the Vice Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. She introduced the bill (READ IT HERE) along with Democratic Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who is the  Ranking Member of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee.

Blackburn said, ?This is a basic issue of modernizing the law to get rid of a dated loophole that only applies to AM/FM radio. Internet radio pays music creators fair market value for their performances, satellite radio pays music creators for performances, cable and satellite TV/radio stations pay music creators for their performances. Everyone but AM/FM radio pays.?
