Philips Makes CBS Radio Proud In Baltimore

11-19-14

Bob Philips recently celebrated his 25th year in radio. This year Philips is one of a handful of managers from across the country chosen by Radio Ink as one of the best managers in the industry. The 2014 Radio Ink Best Managers in Radio issue is out now. Sixteen of Philips? 25 years in the business have been spent with CBS Radio. He considers his biggest accomplishments, and a key to his successful run in radio, to be developing new revenue streams outside of spot radio and adapting to change. Let?s hear more about how Bob Philips, Baltimore market manager, succeeds, leads, and wins for CBS Radio?

What motivates you every day to lead your people to do great things?
My family's credit card expense. In all seriousness, our entire organization  takes great pride in trying to be an industry leader. The sense of accomplishment where others don't  venture creates the sense of pride for all in the cluster.

What is the number-one challenge (and why) facing you in 2015?
Educating top-level marketing executives on the power of radio in the new-media world and how radio can deliver in so many forms. Our goal is to create scale for radio in our marketplace.

What role does digital play at your radio station today, specifically in your sales department?
Digital plays a huge role in both the programming side of the building and the sales side. Digital gives us another audience touch point, offering great feedback and engagement  to our programmers. In sales, digital enables us to engage with consumers and improve our relationship with them in their day-to-day life.Digital advertising is our fastest-growing asset and we expect it to continue as CBS Local continues to grow in each and every market.

If everyone you managed were sitting in a room without you, how would they describe you, how you manage, and how you lead?
Tough but fair; leads by example. Venture out of the office and engage with your listeners and visit with your clients.
