Commissioners Take Opposing Views On Broadband Reclassification

FCC Commissioners Michael Copps and Meredith Attwell Baker, speaking at separate events this week, took sharply opposing views of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski's plan to reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service so the FCC can regulate it more closely. Copps, speaking at Stanford Law School, said the reclassification will "protect consumers from unjust and unreasonable discrimination," while Baker, at Broadband Policy Summit IV in DC, says Genachowski's proposal would use "the most intrusive one-wire tool in the commission's toolbox to regulate the Internet."

Genachowski Asks For Bigger FCC Budget In 2011

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is asking the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government for an additional $19.4 million in 2010, with $11.1 million of that to pay 75 new commission employees. Genachowski proposes an FCC budget for fiscal 2011 of $352.5 million.

Update: FBI Looking At iPad Security Breach

The FBI is looking into the security breach at AT&T that led to the exposure of the e-mail addresses of more than 100,000 iPad 3G users, the Wall Street Journal reports. The FCC has also weighed in on the matter.
