Divided FCC Opens Broadband Proceeding

The FCC has officially opened its proceeding to find the best legal framework for its regulation of broadband following the Comcast court deicsion.FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski (pictured) sees partly reclassifying broadband as a telecommunications service as a way to bring back a "workable light-touch framework for broadband," but Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell says reclassification is unnecessary and the prospect of it has "already caused harm in the marketplace."

SBE Not Invited To FCC Engineering Forum

The Society of Broadcast Engineers was not invited to next week's FCC Broadcast Engineering Forum, and the organization is not happy about it. In a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, SBE President Vincent Lopez expresses "dismay and serious concern" about the forum.

FCC To Commission Ownership Studies

The FCC has put out a request for quotes on nine economic studies to look at the state of the media industry as part of the commission's 2010 quadrennial ownership-rules review. One study will look at "the impact of local media market structure on consumer satisfaction with available broadcast radio and television service." The commission also wants information on the effect of the local media market structure on radio and TV news, civic knowledge and engagement, and "viewpoint diversity."

A new patent application filed by Apple is built around HD Radio, Apple Insider reports. The patent for "Digital Radio Tagging Using an RF Tuner Accessory" could let users scan and search stations with a handheld device.

Survey: Consumers More Likely To Buy From Media Site Advertisers

A survey conducted by Harris Interactive for the Online Publishers Association found that people who make purchases from online advertisers are "significantly more likely" to buy from advertisers on media sites such as ESPN.com or NYTimes.com than from advertisers on portals like AOL News or social media sites.
