The Radio Industry was abuzz yesterday when Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro tweeted out this picture of Fred Jacobs and Jeff Smuylan from the Canadian Music Week convention in Toronto. The caption read, "Ran into Emmis Chair Jeff Smulyan who demoed cool radio smartphone tech used by @Sprint." Shapiro was very critical of the radio industry when Smulyan went to Congress to ask for a mandate for the chip. Yesterday Shapiro told Radio Ink, The NextRadio app is cool. "And it's not simply an FM chip." Shapiro says it's up to the marketplace to decide the future of the FM Chip and when the NextRadio deal with Sprint was announced he applauded it.
